The 1829 letter which Charles Dobie deciphered, states John McFarlane was born on April 26, 1758. John McFarlane lived in Glasgow. The entry for his 2nd marriage and first child's baptism listed his occupation as a stocking maker; subsequent baptisms listed his occupation as hosier (retailer of socks, stockings and gloves). He married when he was a young man and his first wife probably died in her 20's. His son from this marriage was John McFarlane, the recipient of the 1829 letter.

John McFarlane was born July 29, 1779 according to the above-mentioned 1829 letter.
Michael Bogle McFarlane was born July 9, 1785 in Glasgow. Witnesses - Michael Bogle and Will. McFarlane. He married Matilda Richmond on 28th March 1807 in Edinburgh. Their children were born in Glasgow. In 1825, he was a linen and woolen draper and a silk merchant, at 89 Hutcheson St., Glasgow. He died on December 9, 1828, age 43, of palsy, in Glasgow.
Janet McFarlane was born March 25, 1787 in Glasgow. Witnesses to baptism - Michael Bogle and James McFarlane.
James McFarlane was born February 7, 1789 in Glasgow. Witnesses to baptism - Michael Bogle and Wm. Newlands (a linen and woolen draper in 1791 on High Street in Glasgow).
Luke McFarlane was born April 6, 1791 in Glasgow. Witnesses - George McFarlane and Luke Cross.
Elizabeth McFarlane was born January 25, 1793 in Grahamston, Barony, Lanark and baptized February 7, 1793, "5th child". Witnesses - Luke Cross and James Huming(sp.?).
Robertson McFarlane was born January 25, 1795 in Glasgow. Witnesses to baptism - George McFarlane and Allan Bogle.
Mary McFarlane was born January 20, 1798 in Glasgow. Witnesses - George McFarlane and Michael Bogle.
George McFarlane was born March 15, 1800 in Glasgow. Witnesses - George and James McFarlane.
Margaret McFarlane was born July 5, 1802 in Glasgow. Witnesses - George McFarlane and Alexander Wylie.
Archibald McFarlane was born March 21, 1805 in Glasgow. Witnesses to baptism - James and Michael McFarlane (probably Michael Bogle).Note: As the dates of death recorded in 1828 for Elisabeth Bogle and Michael McFarlane are several days after the dates in John McFarlane's letter, it is possible the registrar recorded the dates of burial instead of death.
John McFarlane was born July 29, 1779 according to the 1829 letter. His occupation in Scotland was a wright. In 1821 he, his wife and five children sailed to Canada on the "David of London" and settled in Lanark twp. John died between 1829 and 1834 in Lanark Twp., Lanark County, Ontario.

John "McFarline" was born October 19, 1811 and baptized on October 31, 1811 in Low Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland. In 1841, John married Mary Sutherland in Ramsay, Lanark Co., Ontario. He died on September 10, 1893 in Lanark Co.
Robert "McFarlan" was born February 2, 1814 in Glasgow. Witnesses to baptism - John and James McFarlane. Robert married Margaret Anderson in Lanark Co., Ontario He died on July 10, 1892 in Lanark Twp., Lanark Co., Ontario.
Mary McFarlane was born April 7, 1816 in Glasgow. Witnesses to baptism - John Craig and Robert McLellan.
Mary McFarlane was born October 26, 1817 in Glasgow. Witness to baptism - John Craig and David Miller. She married John Armour in Lanark Co., Ontario and died on December 24, 1902 in Lanark Co., Ontario.
George McFarlane was born April 5, 1820 in Glasgow. Witnesses - John and Michael B. McFarlane. George died on March 4, 1905 in Perth, Lanark Co., Ontario.
Michael Bogle McFarlane was born on May 10, 1824 in Lanark Co. In 1846, he married Margaret Livingston, in the Bathurst District. Michael died on December 12, 1903 in Grattan twp., Renfrew County, Ontario.
