CARLETON PLACE, ONTARIO

Unknown Family, Carleton Place, Ontario, 1928.

These two photos were found in an antique store in Almonte, Ontario, during the winter of 2020. Unfortunately the people are identified only by first name. The same family seems to be involved – the house is the same, and the girl, Dorothy, appears in both photos. The first name "Erdis" is unique to the 1921 census, but it belongs to a child in New Brunswick, and none of his siblings' names match the names in this photo.

January 4, 2020 : Thanks to the Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum or (see them on Facebook) for identifying the location of this house — 266 Bridge Street, Carleton Place. The name of the family is still a mystery. Does anyone know of an Erdis?

January 4, 2025 : Thanks to Ken Godfrey for pointing out that the Hurdis family lived in Carleton Place. I checked the 1931 Canadian census and found 24 people by that name listed, plus another 10 with the name Hurdes. The name "Hurdis" sems to be a common Icelandic given name but all instances of it are in western Canada.
