SANISH, NORTH DAKOTA

Cattle roundup, Sanish North Dakota,
about 1934

My mother took these photos the year she taught school in Sanish. Although she had been born in North Dakota (Kenmere) she hated teaching and her year in Sanish cured her of it permanently.

Sanish was one of the dozen or more communities which were flooded when the Garrison Dam was built in the early 1950's. The newly-created Lake Sakakawea also flooded many Native Indian sacred sites and hundreds of thousands of acres of prime farmland.
